Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
So, if you were going to drop big bucks on a new watch would you go Fenix or 945? I am stuck. REI has a sale starting May 17th that could make the Fenix line pretty affordable (relatively speaking)
That’s tough. The FR945 now technically has more features than the Fenix 5+, primarily around all the FirstBeat stuff, and those features aren’t coming to the Fenix 5+ says Garmin.
Note that historically that REI sale (which Clever Training also does), doesn’t include the discount on Garmin watches. I don’t expect that to change this time around either. Whereas, this sale (no matter where you get it), is a pretty solid discount.
But, in the event you are using REI – then using the following REI link (link to avantlink.com) helps support the site! After you land on REI’s page, you can just search from there (and even to store pickup too). Cheers!
Thanks for the link. I’ll make sure to use it.
Any news about price drop in CT eu? F5+ is listed there at €569.99 or £499.99 compared to €592.79/ £519.99 for 945.
I haven’t heard of any UK/EU price drop plans. In the case of the US, this one is supported by Garmin, versus in Europe that’s far more rare. :-/
Are you planning to do a review of the Marq Athlete? If so, when is it due?
I am. My guess is about 7-10 days out.
Awesome. I’ve probably succumbed to the urge before then, hoping it’s not worse than a current Fenix 5x+ at least.
Did you hear about this!!!

Well that’s a pretty crappy situation. It’s almost like he wanted out with it. Perhaps the lower range wasn’t good enough.
Thanks for the link to the BikeSnob article. He definitely makes so great points about the time and safety factor of bringing the spin studio into your home. I don’t own a Peloton but appreciate the time savings knocking out a tough workout on the bike trainer when I don’t have time or inclination to go outside.
For folks that like to spin but don’t have access or time to attend a class, it’s a valid time vs. cost trade off.
I’m not sure I agree with the sexist slant he portrays, though. I believe it’s just another example of people poking fun at adults who like to ride bikes.
Hi Ray
What is possibly going at Garmin with the Vector 3. They have been deafly quiet. Is there a new Vector being tested by yourself or Garmin, due for release in the near future? I say this given the time intervals between updates.
Thanks
They’ve released updates every few months for software, including ones that now shift to the official ANT+ Cycling Dynamics standard. Generally speaking the soonest we see power meter refreshes from any brand (of hardware) is 2 years, with 3 years being more the norm.
For software of power meters, usually most companies only update it a few times a year – if that. In some cases just once per year (or even less). Garmin’s latest Vector 3 firmware update was the end of January: link to www8.garmin.com
