Definitely cut back a bit but as long as it’s not too humid I keep enough up to counteract a bit of the food and booze. My next holiday is the first I’m trying to tie in a race.
Mainly I like to geocache on vacation. I like to go on long hikes to beautiful locations that I would have never known existed to find them.
Turns out my last few vacations have been due to races (1/2 marathons, 5k) and a week on the Colorado section of the Continental Divide.
Training for me consists of soaking in the sights while being active, a little hiking, a little running, all while enjoying some place new!
Always going for minimum a run on vacation … Trying to color that earth map with gps data
Just enough training to balance out the vacation food and drinks!
Running. Quick and easy when pressed for time
I try to keep my training schedule even while on vacation. If I can bike or swim, I usually run and I get to take in the new sights when doing so.
I try to bring my packable equipment with me to remind me to do something but I also try to use that time to rely on do anywhere type exersices. Bodyweight routines, rely on walking as much as possible, always use the stairs. There are lots of ways you can work out, simulate training, and keep active without following your regular routine.
Of course sometimes I just chill, and relax and gain a few pounds, because the gym and the running, and lifting and riding will be there when I get back!!!!!!
Thanks
Early morning starts with long bike spins before the family wakes, then full on family days.
Running is the best thing to do on holiday! New places to go! That and tramping, nothing like long walks in the mountains to build endurance ;)
A lot of my vacations are based around going somewhere to row or cycle, so would do that morning/day/evening depending on what else is going on. e.g. chasing the tour de france after alpine stages last summer
If on a proper vacation I turn to running, such an easy way to get some exercise in with no faff, if you’re in the city or rural area. My favourite has to be running in cape town, up and down Devil’s peak.
Running, if possible rent a bike
Running, Beer, Barbecue, Running, Beer, Barbecue, Running, Beer, Barbecue, ….
Just fun with friends …
Absolutely love running when on holiday. Try and get out on the first morning for 5/6 miles to get my bearings and see a few of the sights. In Rome next week , can’t wait to run along the Tiber!
If I can bring my bike, I bike, otherwise running and walking.
Running is a good bet no matter the location.
Running at 6:00 AM, than ice cream and italian food endurance training.
On vacation with the Fenix 3? My training is to try and get lost, and let the trackback feature work its magic!
I am usually hiking, kayaking and camping when on vacations, getting away from the hotel rooms of the daily job, unless the wife demands it..
Usually running and ice-creaming time to time
Running to see the sights faster
I love to run as I never get to take my bike away with me.
I find its a great way to explore new and old haunts alike. I still like to go out early to start the day right, and see the holiday location whilst it’s quiet.
My runs tend to be less training orientated, and just try to soak in the views.
Bike and hike vacations in the southwest US in February can’t be beat!
Just returning from vacation in Boston :-)
Only swimming
As a resident of Canadas most northern big city, my outdoor bike training is quite limited. As such I almost always drag my bike on vacation with us (much to my wifes chagrin) and try to get in as much riding as possible. I always seem to have my most epic rides on these trips. My biggest regret (which I intend to remedy first chance I get) is chickening out of trying to climb Mt. Haleakala in Maui when I had the chance.
Mainly what’s the schedule… unless I don’t have a big race coming up, in which case the schedule is “ice cream, beer, ice cream”
Running and some body weight exercises! I’m not usually lucky enough to bring my bike along with me!
I usually do photorunbikayakhiking. Then I stop, look back, and press on in reverse order.
I always try to squeeze in an easy run or two on holiday, it’s a great way to see the place… but I don’t need to convince Ray of that!
Running, running, and more running. The perfect way to explore.
I take the bike with me and try to get out and do some long distance rides.
Training? On vacation? No!
Run!
Vacation is time for longer and more of harder runs as well as biking, even renting road racing bikes.
I usually keep on with training (mostly running, but occasionally a tri), but I also usually pick it up so that I can eat “ice cream and chocolate bonbons,” but in my case it’s typically oreos and chocolate chip cookies. :-)
Vacations usually include a race followed by relaxing and eating everything that looks and sounds good.
Ideally the race will be at the start of a vacation. Typically the race will be a marathon followed by becoming a tourist and slowing down the pace of life.
On vacation I add cycling to my running training. More time means more sports :)
Running and discovering cities on foot
Usually when I’m on vacation I prefer to just relax, BUT my wife always makes me run…and I thank her for it later!
Usually I get in the walking department, try to go everywhere on foot, so it replaces the training… Sort of…
Thanks as allways for the giveaway.
PF
Training becomes exploring! so many places to see.
Cycling. I take a bike if i can, otherwise it’s hotel stationary unit..
Valvation = Training
Vacation training means trying to keep up with my son ( who train for xc) and daughter (swimming). So no chance of skipping training :-)
Usually stick to running. Minimal equipment or pool needed. Mostly I just try to not lose too much ground
Usually, I take it a little easier. No running or biking, just a core or strength workout each day. Unless its a really pretty place, of course!
Reduced training early in the day, designed at maintaining but not to interfere with vacation. Then get out and enjoy where I am with all the things I don’t get to do and see everyday.
I like to go hiking in the mountains in Switzerland. I like to be able to see current altitude, and to make some waypoints to find back to or preplan a route.
Will be on vacation this summer in Paris – had a few conditions: see the last stage of the Tour de France, do at least 1 day of road cycling and eat a cupcake at The Girl’s cupcakery!!! Will probably do a bit of running around the river following your trails!
I’ve been known to take everything allowing me to swim, bike and run. At the very least I always take my running shoes…..
Just arrived in america – All ready bought a temporary bicycle for the trip. Keep it going.
I love running on vacation, it’s the best way to discover a new city! I usually have more time to run longer. Sometimes, I’ll look up running paths on Strava beforehand, somtimes I’ll just swing it.
Running! although i rarely leave New Zealand i imagine i wouldn’t cut back on my training.
Running would be a nice way to check new places!
Vacations are usually centered around a triathlon race
Can’t pause sports on vacation. Multisport watch is much needed.
Just easy running with dog in forrest.. thats it
During the holidays my training normally turns into chasing two boys around the park doing whatever sport they’ve decided is the favourite that day. Although it’s great fun its when I’m more likely to injure myself.
When not with the children I try and get in more swimming since the times at the pool don’t really suit normally.
My husband loves GPS units and use them when we walk in the mountains on our summer vacation.
Aaaaahhhhh running on a beach!
Paradise!!!!
Sunrise running!
Cheers
F
Easy runs, swimming and paddle boarding!
I like to get long training runs done when I’m away! Usually training for a marathon and when I’m on the road, I love to invest a few hours into running!
keep running!
Vacation for me ends up being hiking and biking if I am lucky. With a 1 year old daughter I get enough exercise chasing her around all the time. Plenty of ice cream reps too!
When on vacation I try to run, hike, or some other type of cross training. Usually the bike stays at home.
Running, bicycling, hiking, cayaking, climbing…It depends on location and buddies with me. But it’s sport-vacation everytime!
If I’m able to take my bike. I usually go longer but at a slower pace and explore.
For short vacations I run, longer ones I take my Ritchey Breakaway travel bike.
I try to keep to my training schedule when my vacation plans allow. If not I usually head out for an early run before we start the daily activities. Vacations are usually to warm destinations so I am usually able to get in a swim as well. If we’re exploring a place we haven’t been before that usually means a bike ride around town!
Vacation is Vacation for me! No training but i try to eat healthy.
Speed training on hot summer season plus lots of beach running
I typically cut back. However, when traveling with the in-laws, my training presses on or increases.
No slowing down, keep up with the running routine.
I run wherever I go, usually I vacation at the beach, so perfect for some beach runs.
I just go do a few runs. GPS watches make it easy to track how far I have gone.
Just relaxing on hols…
I usually take my running shoes everywhere so I can continue following my training plan. Also simple body weight exercises like burpees and squats in the hotel room. Most of my vacations involves SCUBA diving, so I tend ti also swim a lot on my vacations.
Really depends on the where the vacation is but usually try to get some runs in wherever I go.
Cut back to only run and circuit training.
While I’ on vacation, I use to stick to my plan, sometimes even adding some extra easy paced runs
When on vacation I try to get some biking in, but not much more than that. I try to work my training around my vacation schedule. I also try to eat normal when away.
I run a little less than normal and enjoy some of the local foods wherever I am.
Our vacations usually involve a lot of hiking and walking.
My vacations normally involve sport, either golf, skiing or biking. So no other training required.
On vacation I take tourist runs wherever the best sights and sounds are
Wow the comments are just flowing in…
On holidays I do partake in the local flavours but also find a run or bike a great reset and a chance to explore intimately…
Simon
I scout out some routes beforehand, bring along my FR220, and explore the new place on foot.
Since I’m not really, technically “training” – but I do swim, bike and run workouts; my vacation training doesn’t really change. If it’s a nice climate, I’ll try to get some workouts in. My last vacation was to Kona and I rented a bike and did some rides, swam some (following turtles also) and did some hikes and one short run. Did a pretty fair amount of walking around doing the tourist thing also.
Next week I’m heading to Napa, mainly to do the Tour de Cure charity bike ride. Other than that I’ll do a couple of other rides and a run or hike or two.
And, I’m going to bring TWO! watches – my normal Casio watch and my FR310XT.
If I’m driving, and near water, I will bring my sea kayak(s) and paddle. If I’m driving, and there’s not any water, I may bring my road bike. Otherwise, it’s bon-bons, relaxation, and an extra couple of pounds to work off when I get home.
Biking if the bike gets to come with me. Otherwise, swimming, running or hiking.
Need to justify those desserts somehow.
Swims in the seas and just chilling.
Generally speaking I cut out intense workouts and try to get runs in without it intruding on the vacation. This may mean a treadmill run or two.
Running and cycling as usual, only add some sailing, canoeing. Ice cream – obviously.
When I’m on holidays if I have my bike with me I will go out as often as I can with it and I will also make some time to go for a few runs. :)
Keep on training, just do it a little later in the morning.
“Run, rabbit run Dig that hole, forget the sun”
Always running :-)
I always bring my running shoes…but they usually end up sitting in the corner silently judging me while I make a third drink.
Hi Ray
Usually hit the trails around Guayaquil on my mtb.
Best regards
Trying to stick to my trainiing plan with both swimminig, biking and running, but as the ice cream is both wonderful and cold… i knock down a few…
