A November Garmin (Fancy) Fenix3 Giveaway

IMG_9544

It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month.  Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago.  My bad.

No worries though, I’m here to save the day.  Or at least, save Tuesday.  I’ll be giving you a Fenix3.  But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches.  Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane.  My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.

In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago.  One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings.  Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.

Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:

How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?

Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.

Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog.  Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases.  Now you can!  If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts.  More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site.  Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants.  And pictures of the food I eat.  And my travels.  None of those disappear.

I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card).  I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info.  But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads).  But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway.  As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.

You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits.  Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years.  Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.

With that – thanks for reading, and the support!  And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches!  You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.

FOUND THIS POST USEFUL? SUPPORT THE SITE!

Hopefully, you found this post useful. The website is really a labor of love, so please consider becoming a DC RAINMAKER Supporter. This gets you an ad-free experience, and access to our (mostly) bi-monthly behind-the-scenes video series of “Shed Talkin’”.

Since I live in Austria, I have to adapt to the environment. In winter I do a lot of skiing and cross country skiing but I also like to go mountain biking and running with the right equipment.

  2. Dennis Nielsen

Im cutting back on cycling, and instead going to the gym for more strength – running, which is my primary sport, will continue as always – there is no bad weather for running 🙂

  3. Brian Ballard

Generally try to do a little more run focus since I can do that in any weather or time of day. Work in some biking on the trainer in the garage.

  4. Patrick Silva

Winter is not a big issue in Rome, just need to keep a little bundle.

  5. Ben

For cycling in the Sydney Australia metro area, I wish it was colder sometimes so I could justify splurging on a smart trainer and do some Zwift sessions and the like. Maybe I’ll find another excuse for doing that one day. But for my winters just some bib tights, thermal jersey, gloves and wind proof jacket are the most I need to battle the chills here. 🙂

  6. Bertrand

Running requires more clothes (I have a file where I can enter the temperature/ humidity/ wind and it tells me how I should dress).

Cycling is the same but I also train less outside (I don’t have a home trainer so I go to the gym).

    Swimming does not change!

  7. Daryl

I don’t change things up too much: more fast miles running, I’m indoors on the bike, and I am probably more inclined to head to the gym for a swim and some weights.

  8. Simon

I just keep on running. Perhaps I’ll put a jacket on. It’s not that cold here in germany.

  9. Jason mant

    Yeah early Christmas

  10. Carl

More clothes on, Icebug running shoes, Sufferfest, more slow running in the woods and less fast intervals…

  11. Darren

All i need for winter are my running mittens. No snow of note here in Australia!

  12. Jari

There’s no sign of winter yet even in Northern Europe. I’m ready, the skis are ready, but there’s no snow 🙁

  13. Roger

I don’t change my running too much, but run a few cross countries rather than road races.

  14. Thor

I move a lot of workouts on to the treadmill and indoor trainer but still try to get outdoors if the weather permits.

  15. Typically bad ice will drive me inside for fear of injury but, other than that, I try to embrace whatever the Scottish winter throws at us. You just never know when you might end up racing in inclement weather so may as well train in inclement weather. Particularly fond of the ‘timewarp’ effect of a dark evening/early morning head torch run on the trail in a snowstorm :o)

  16. Roger

I use indoortraining center for spinning, when the white fluffy thing hits the ground it’s time to wax the skies and do some Nordic skiing 🙂

  17. Maarten

I just keep running as usual, I just wear some extra clothing and make sure I’m visible in the dark. And in case of snow there’s always the treadmill.

  18. Trail running, all year round, with slightly higher knees if the snow is deep.

  19. Robin

I wear waterproof tennis shoes and splash through the mud puddles

  20. Gordon Kraut

Luckily enough I live in a year round temperate climate so can even do my runs in the middle of winter although it is a bit dark..

  21. TriAbel

Running through cold rain is a real challenge for me… But I do try to run as often as I normally would

  22. Tom

Slowing down a bit in november, but not changing too much.

  23. Sorin

This year I decided I will stand up to winter, so I registered for a half marathon on Dec 13th, just to keep myself longer “in season”. Winter decided to strike back, so since last week we have sunny weather and 15 degrees C 🙂
After that I will probably “recover” until New Year’s with the usual splurge(but less guilt), and in January an February just keep a low profile with 5k-10k runs when there’s not too much snow/cold.

  24. Matt

Suck it up and keep running outside usually. Sometimes head to the dreadmill.

  25. Nimrod

No changes – run outdoor in any weather.

  26. Tommies

Just train a little bit harder 🙂

  27. kapral

That’s my rule, below 0 degrees Celsius, ride a indoor bike, I go to the gym instead of exercising outdoors, but keep running outside !!!

  28. Jason

No change, just a few extra layers of clothing.

  29. Zenon

Less cycling, more running and as much as possible ski running (depend on snow condition – last two winters was horrible only few days with snow).

  30. Christophe Larchier

Tacx Vortex and Traineroad for biking, running with more layers, swimming as usual

  31. Bruno

Love to run when it colder, beter than too warm.

  32. Rai

A lot of turbo sessions, but more outdoor running!

  33. Syrio

Winter training is one of those mind over matter problems. I hate the cold and the darkness, so instead of running in parks and forests I choose brightly lit city side-walks that also happen to be sheltered from gusts of freezing wind and someone even shovels the snow away for me 😉

  34. Sören Gayer

If it’s cold but dry I’ll do my regular training outside. Unfortunately in my place that’s pretty seldom, and this winter seems to be particular wet so I’ll use the treadmill more often. And I’m going to by myself a trainer for indoor biking.

  35. Philipp

So far, I just need to take a headlamp with me and put on an extra layer of clothing. Once it gets really cold, though, I guess I’ll switch to more swimming and Pilates (What, pie and lattes???).

Aaand, well, I don’t live in Hawaii, but I’m going there on vacation in January. That counts, right?! 😉

  36. DavidR

Indoor trainer/Netflix, strength conditioning and swimming will rule until the clocks go forward in March.

  37. Sander den Hartog

“There no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”, Thus trying to keep things as normal as possible. Rest of the time I spend planning races and gear for next year.

  38. Rob H

Invoke rules 5 and 9 and crack on

  39. Andrew Crockett

Got to keep running as doing the London Marathon. Although will introduce a weeks ski training over new year 🙂

  40. Phillip

Plenty of time on the Tacx, and escape to Mallorca as often as possible.

  41. Lance Reynolds

Don’t change much, just do more indoor activities.

  42. Clement Riche

More indoor trainings in winter, home training and swimming, plus trail running 🙂

  43. Wayne Schaap

It used to be more running – less riding, but that may change with my Smart Trainer & Zwift.

  44. Peppe

Crossfit mtb and cross country skiing… After all winter is not so bad

  45. GO

Change sports, work on technique with ergometer

  46. charles le gall

Starting the base training on Trainerroad with my kickr and swimming 3x/week. I live in France so
you know how it is !

  47. Enrique

Cold and windy winters in Zaragoza, but I try to keep the same. Good winter running clothes and try not to think about it.

  48. Krzysztof

More swimming, will switch to mtb. Probably do some strength training as well

  49. Thomas Hunt

More running and swimming, less cycling.
Trying Zwift out for the first time now as well!

  50. Mark

Always 100% full gas no matter what time of the year

  51. Nathan Byren

I live in Cape Town so my Girl (not The Girl :D) and I will be braving the winds and rain of Table Mountain for continued trail running, so no change of actual workout.

  52. Barrie

Treadmill, Tacx Vortex, Rowing Machine and free weights.
Plus a lot of cross country racing.

  53. Alberto

Living in Sweden means technical gear for all the body, which is always a good excuse to hit your fav running shop and get a new item 🙂

  54. Richard

As a runner In London it is the dark evenings which suck the most, it requires more treadmill work in the gym, or if I’m feeling fruity maybe a lunch time run in Regent’s Park during work.

Any long runs have to be at the weekend during the day, which with a young family is exceptionally inconvenient, but you know gotta run!

The other annoyance is the constant and almost never ending stream of colds, they are just rubbish and have to be endured.

I don’t want to hear about Hawaii residents.

  55. Owain

For running in the UK in the winter, I’ll sometimes wear a pair of thin gloves and if it is really bad maybe a hat too.

  56. 6co

    Treadmill

  57. Shane C

Hat, gloves, an extra layer and a few more treadmill runs than I’d like bit hail, rain or snow I’ll still get the same mileage done

  58. Winter is for running, summer is for cycling.
    And that’s it. 🙂

  59. Antonio Grimaldi

More time on the trainer…. Running as usual!

  60. Gabriel R.

Crossfit and running! Plus a home trainer of course…

  61. Jorge

Different landscape, but I keep hiking. Biking gets a bit harder with the cold weather, but often times it’s warm enough by noon to sneak a ride.

  62. Giovanni

Always running with no changes (well, as I run at 6 am it tends to be really dark during winter, but that’s the only change)

  63. Pete

Not too much different, just add an extra layer, and wear a waterproof more often.

  64. George Dibb

Winter in the UK is cold and wet, so get the tights and long sleeved base layers out. The trick is the motivation during the dark evenings and mornings though!

  65. AndrewB

More running. And the cervelo goes to the back of the shed & the hardtail starts terrorising the local paths & trails.

    Oh, and more cake.

  66. annette

More layers and turbo, but not necessarily together

  67. To the gym it is. Indoor Cycling (boring) and pumping iron.

  68. Jyrki Solja

Wintersports for teh win! Lakes, ponds, rinks and snow, anything goes. Alongside “normal” all-year-round stuff like cycling, running and indoor sports.

  69. Grazza

More clothes and more time in the gym.

  70. Tobias

I do swimming in indoor pools and I do more cycling indoor with a stationary trainer, but I try to still go outside for running.

  71. Erwin

I continue training in the winter, but add more layers of clothes to compensate for the lower temperatures.

  72. Kjell Inge

After a healthy autumn break its all about prep and base building. Less biking since its cold here in Norway, but still a lot of running and strength and stability.

  73. Julien

Still try to go outside for biking once a week if not raining too hard – I stop going out when I see ice 🙂
But will go only once and do an indoor session on the trainer.
I continue going to run outside – just love the feeling. And in the end just a question of clothing ! Have to find the right balance between not beeing too cold at the beginning and not too warm at the end. Intervals on the treadmill though – if any.

Thanks for the giveaway and the awesome site –

  74. Kevin

Definately not even close to Hawaii :). Winter just means pulling out some extra clothes and prepping my bike for winter wonderland, even though I’m cutting back on outdoor time anyway. Just focussing more on indoor sports and preparing for snowboarding!

  75. Sergi

    Good Morning!

1.- Hit the gym for weaknesses strengtening
2.- Ski mountaineering as much as I can
    3.- Just 1 day running/week: VO2max or speed
    4.- 2 days 1-2h cycling

  76. Hernan

One of those lucky ducks… Living in the desert in israel.

  77. Vincent

Winter doesn’t change much for me. Live in Holland, run all year long, rain or shine! For climbing however, it means no more outdoor rock climbing and a lot of plastic holds in the indoor gyms to keep in shape 🙂

  78. Thomas

The winter training is in gym spinning and the summer is outdoor cycling,

  79. Yann

Track cycling all the way!! A bit of swimming and moderate runs during lunch breaks

  80. martin post

Simply Keep on Running in Snow or Mud. Hit the trails hard!!!!

  81. Lieven

With the road bike cleaned and tucked away, I’ll be on my Kickr during the week and on the MTB during the weekend.

  82. Michael

A native of Paris I have been living in The Netherlands for the past 10 years. In the winter I just put up warmer clothes, hat and gloves. If the snow hits (which is rare nowadays) I may hit the gym and run indoors. But I try not to. And swimming is in the pool (the beach is very close but I prefer using it for surfing rather than swimming)

  83. Matt Loewel

    Skiing and cross training 🙂

  84. Amir Y

Here in Israel winter is when you can finally train outside in comfortable weather. It’s summer when you have to hide indoors.

  85. Florian

    Merci d’avance! 😉

  86. Alberto

I just grab my headlights and enjoy running in solitude, or use the rollers to start adding km to the legs.

  87. I am one of those lucky ducks who knows how to ski and enjoys nordic skiing in winter.

  88. Martins M

    More cross-country skiing and running.

  89. Jasper

I’ve just installed a tv in front of my hometrainer. No excuses anymore this winter for training…

  90. I live in Almería the sunniest city in Europe so… I’m a lucky duck that needs a fenix 3 🙂

  91. Andrey

    More swimming and indoor biking

  92. Edmar Seguinte

I just started cycling this summer. It’s gotten pretty chilly in the mornings so I got me a dcrainmaker approved trainer to use through the winter.

  93. Fred

Well… I just stop biking and only run…

  94. Piotr

pool&running as usual, bike when warmer and spinning if not. rowing from time to time!

  95. bachulator

    Shifting from riding to running…

  96. Ewan

I have to justify those numerous pairs of running tights somehow…

  97. alan galang

winter? what winter? don’t have that in these parts

  98. JR

I’ll switch to skiing and cross country skiing.

  99. MANUEL CORTES FERNANDEZ

No specific change, just more clothes… and sometime, even more clothes…

  100. Filippo Martinelli

Hi everybody, in winter I use to continue my training running and climbing, well probably I use to ski or climb on ice instead than on rocks
