A November Garmin (Fancy) Fenix3 Giveaway

IMG_9544

It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month.  Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago.  My bad.

No worries though, I’m here to save the day.  Or at least, save Tuesday.  I’ll be giving you a Fenix3.  But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches.  Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane.  My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.

In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago.  One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings.  Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.

Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:

How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?

Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.

Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog.  Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases.  Now you can!  If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts.  More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site.  Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants.  And pictures of the food I eat.  And my travels.  None of those disappear.

I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card).  I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info.  But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads).  But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway.  As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.

You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits.  Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years.  Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.

With that – thanks for reading, and the support!  And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches!  You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.

    Looks cool!

  2. I am fortunate enough to live in a place where I can train year-round (Austin, TX!), so I get the majority of my training in during the winter months. The summer months here, however, can be brutally hot, so I have to adjust my intensity levels and really watch my nutrition. A watch like the Fenix3 could really help me train smarter via heart rate to make sure I’m not over doing it when the tempurarure and humidity rises.

  3. Scott

I still try to run and ride outside when it is dry, but I definitely end up spending more time on the treadmill and trainer at home.

  4. Leonard

    From roadbike to mtb
    And running as always

  5. Holly Machamer

Layer layer layer until the temp goes below freezing. Then it’s off to the gym!

  6. zac

concept for the winter add layers and if you can’t find 45 mins a day do 30 mins no exceptions.

  7. Cheryl Gundy

Something different for me this year, joined a gym and focusing on my swimming. Bike on a trainer at home and treadmill when I can’t run outside.

  8. Cindy Hankins

I live in Eastern Washington… Snow, ice, wind, etc during the winter. I have running clothes and accessories to get me through the winter and join a local Fleet Feet’s Winter Warriors group. Nothing like freezing with a large group!

  9. Leslie Baker

Snow sports here in Canada – fun off-season.

  10. Christina Taylor

Lucky enough to live in the Pacific Northwest, can still run outside, just get a little wetter!

  11. David

    Hi Ray,

Weather is it winter/spring/summer/autumn, I’m doing bike every 2 days, all over the year! I’m not living in Hawaii, rather cold (in winter) Poland. In order to properly prepare myself and a bike for the winter, I’m fitting spikes tires for the bike and a waterproof, winter wardrobe for myself. That’s all what I need to do not stop training just because of weather. Ohhhh WAIT!!!!! Sorry……one thing would keep my smile wilder while riding – the Fenix3! That would definitely keep me wormer this winter ! (and might be it will kick my ass to start running)

  12. Charlotte

    Treadmill and swimming pool.

  13. Alex A.

I hit the trainer for biking and swim a lot more since we have a great indoor pool here.

  14. Charlie

On to the turbo more and more layer when out on sunday club runs for me!

  15. Kalvin Foley

Unfortunately my sport activity gets regulated to the weekends due to it being dark when I get off work… I’m pretty much regulated to night running and inside strength training during the week.

  16. Cedric C

Rehab for a long-term running injury!
I also bought a new indoor trainer to get through the cold months.
    Cheers

  17. Jim

Just more rides on the trainer than usual.

  18. Ron

a couple of ways, first set up the trainer and once snow is on the ground wax up the skis and go XC skiing.

  19. Domabil

I enjoy trail running on a cold autumn days.

  20. Chance

With the 2ft of snow coming down outside, it’s time to jump on the Wahoo KICKR and get to Zwifting. I’ll definitely be doing some of their training plans this winter…

  21. Vitor Rosa

I live in Portugal near Lisbon and the winter isn’t that bad (mainly in what it relates to cold, because we have some rain). Considering that and the fact that I prefer to train outdoors, I try not to change too much my training schedule

  22. Jan Prada

I always run some race in march , which helps me to stay motivated a dedicated to my training during cold and bad weather months. I also train as much as possible with my friends and try to enjoy every nice and sunny day during fall and winter. And in the winter, crosscountry skiing is nice variagation. 🙂

  23. nikos hasiotis

Winter serious mountain running in Greece begins on the 13th of December on Olympus mountain of the Gods SO THE FENIX WILL BE A MUST HAAAAAAAAAVEEEEE 🙂 have a nice day

  24. Simon

I’m simply focussing on running and my indoor trainer.
As the weather won’t allow for much more here in Switzerland.

  25. Travis

Winter is here in CO. Fat bike time.

  26. Ali

I run fewer miles. Do more on the treadmill and more weight training. And if I’m lucky I do a lot of snow shoeing. ?

  27. FrankBriss

    Riding indoor with my Tacx

  28. Martin Jensen

When i hit winter i stil go out on my mountainbike. That is my primary sport but in those cold month i lower the time on mountainbiking and spend more time on running.. I also use a Bkool once in a while.

  29. Luke

I get a head torch, a hat, gloves and get out there!

  30. Rob

Kickr and any one of a number of programs to make it interesting and worthwhile.

  31. Leon

    I must take warm clothes

  32. Brian Ross

If it is too cold or wet to run outside, I usually suffer through a treadmill run.

  33. Robert D

Cold weather isn’t going to stop me; though I do occasionally get on the “DCR recommended” Vortex Smart for the cycling part of things.

  34. Sadly, I’m on the trainer–a lot–after work.

  35. I just bought a new Elite Turbomuin trainer and downloaded Zwift in order to cheat the bad weather outside. Hopefully there’ll be enough snow nearby to do some XC skiing.
To boost my running motivation I bought myself new shoes and consider taking part in some 10 k crosscountry races. Also eyeing a new personal best.
To strengthen my core I also attend circuit training once a week and plan to visit the gym more regularly, especially when the weather’s bad.

  36. Nate Kane

for the run: hit the trails and enjoy the rainy westcoast puddlestomping weather until year end, and then back on the roads training up for the spring marathon.
for the bike: take it completely inside to train with a great group.

  37. Brian

I just dress warm for running, choose my direction based on wind!

  38. Andy Rhine

Since I am a wimp and cant take cold, my hands just turn to ice under 30 degrees without chem packs, I spend much more time on the treadmill. 🙁

  39. Kerry

I will significantly reduce my volume of running, but will supplement it with spending time on the bike trainer (I just picked up a Kickr this past weekend).

  40. Doru

My winter training in Ontario, Canada consists of more running and less cycling. Joined a gym next to my house and I hope that this will motivate to spend more time in the pool.

  41. More indoor training on the turbo trainer and some outdoor riding when the weather is ok. Will happily run outside but it’s always risky not wanting to catch a cold around Christmas 🙂

  42. Andreas

I grab some studded shoes and build mental toughness in the snow 🙂

  43. Lasse Krogsgaard Prins

The Danish winters are really great for running, so focus is in that and then I use spinning and pool swimming for maintaining the bike and swim parts. when it’s snowing focus is on hot chocolate 🙂

  44. Ryan Richard

I bundle up a bit more. However, if it is icy I’ll hit the treadmill.

  45. Ryan Starbuck

I don’t stop running at any point throughout the winter. Just start wearing my ski gear for running when it gets real cold (below 0F). I move a lot of biking (not all) indoors while attending more classes.
My favorite outdoor activity is swimming but that only works a couple months of the year in NYC so its back indoors for the other 10 months.

  46. Louis Matherne

I could sure use on of these.

  47. Mel P

Winters in Michigan can be all over the place! My weekday runs will move to the treadmill once the snow and ice hit but my weekend long runs will be outside up to about -10*F. We have some GREAT parks in the area that clear their paths. I’m also adding in some cross training in the pool this winter which I’m excited to start!

  48. Franck D'agostini

I decrease my training volume because it’s off season. I don’t mind working out in winter when dressed accordingly.

  49. tif

I am luckily enough to live in balmy Pennsylvania so I get to appreciate the one month of beautiful weather. The rest of the time involves adapting by having some super warm outdoor running/cycling gear, putting tons of miles on the trainer, and wearing out the swim suit at the local pool.

  50. Joseph Patrowicz

I hate training in the Winter, but I suck it up and go out and run as usual, but with a lot more layers of clothing. I don’t look forward to cold weather runs but I will say that after the run is completed, I do have a great sense of accomplishment.

  51. sam mendo

From running and bicycle riding. I turn into skiing mode in the winter.

  52. Ben

Lots of lights and reflective gear or the treadmill running

  53. Simon L

on with the warm and waterproof layers, lights, mudguard, and keep racking up the base miles commuting to work!

  54. Eric W

Winter for me (up in Canada) is all about the indoor trainer — I don’t mind it as much as others, Zwift had made a big difference

  55. Siabot

    Winter, everyone trains through winter…Right?

  56. Volodymyr Kartavyi

Less running, replace running with ski and more gym workouts…

  57. Amanda

I run on a treadmill since DC tends to get a bit too cold to run outside in the winter.

  58. Michal Grno

During winter I switch more towards anaerobic workouts like weightlifting and indoor climbing / bouldering combined with some mobility workouts like yoga.
But when the weather is okay, I’ll go biking / running outside.

  59. Adam Shaw

The only changes I make during winter training, it in regards to speedwork and hill workouts if there is a lot of snow on the ground! For safety reasons. Still get out and run outdoors and build up the mileage base for spring!

  60. Jared

    Unfortunately more time inside!

  61. In Florida we head back outside from our summer hibernation! Now is the time to get outside and start training!

  62. wojtek

More running (relatively), bike on trainer.

  63. Frank S

Less training in winter, thinking of cyclocross a go.

  64. Chad Alexander

As one who dropped endurance training years ago in favor of strength training, only to pick endurance work up thanks to an amazing location (brand new to swim and bike), I admit I will have to work both. Overall though, training will naturally move back indoors to a strength-based program. I have still not decided if my goal next summer is triathlon (maybe HIM) or marathon-based (OMG that’s far).

Will add Zwift rides this year, since I grabbed a trainer over the summer on clearance, to supplement (maybe replace) my prior winter rowing and kb workouts for endurance. Will use CX to get outside and kept competitive. I may add indoor swim workouts to keep them in memory (I will not have the luxury of 2x week ocean swims next summer). Will need to work more endurance-based work into program since I now want to work both somewhat seasonally. Will continue, but have less emphasis on, body-weight strength/endurance training.

Need to reintegrate family back into programming, especially the regular “Sunday Family Fitness” that we had, but could not continue at our current location. The kids enjoyed it and miss it.

  65. Living in The Netherlands, so yes we know the winter here. I just keep running and swimming. Only go cycling when the weather is ok, still need to buy an trainer.

  66. Stephen

I target fitting into my winter clothes, it requires determined socialising and good food with a dollop of elasticated trousers and comfy jumpers thrown in. #traintolive #resttorecover #courtthemissus #playwiththekids #gimmethegadget

  67. Andreea

Well i take cycling indoors- cause it gets really icy in my side of the country in winter. So i used to take spinning classes, but this year i’m planning to invest in an indoor trainer.

  68. Will Nickell

I ride less and run more. I don’t enjoy running as much as cycling so when it’s nice enough here in Utah I ride.

  69. Katarina

Let’s heat the body by rising the tempo of the run !

  70. Warner Blom

Running keeps going through winter but I’ve now bought a (cheap) hardtail MTB and am hitting the trails locally. Now if only there was a tool to teach me how become a better MTBer over winter…hmmm….

  71. Slaven

A buff, a tight and warm pant, a powerful headlamp, a good pair of trail shoes… And off we go for winter runs in the beautiful forests of Paris, France suburbs… Lucky and happy to be here whatever happens…

  72. mike Behr

I will ride the trainer, swim inside and continue to run outside

  73. Brant

I just end up spending a lot of time at the gym. Boring.

  74. Jenny Paul

I live in sunny Austin, TX so I don’t have to change my schedule much except workout in the morning instead of night so there is daylight! I do take the winter as an off-season and focus more on mountain biking, trail running, and doing less Ironman-related things to give my brain and body a rest.

  75. Steen Sadolin

More indoor and some MTB here in Scandinavia

  76. Ondrej Vanis

I just dress up more and go for volume rather than anything else. Winter outdoors is beautiful.

  77. Noah

I ride indoors on my trainer but continue to run outside with as many layers as possible.

  78. Phuc Gin

When I travel, I Mostly do indoor training :(. Sucks but gotta keep up my hot bod!

but I live in sf so temps are consistent at around 60s and I am able to train outside!

I also add additional strength workouts 😉

  79. Tyler

More layers for running and a little more time with the rowing machine.

  80. James

I’m breaking out the CX bike and mudguards this year, and just layering up for base mile runs. I’m really excited to be training through the winter as last year I was hobbling around rehabbing my Achilles!

  81. Roelof Koelewijn

When winter comes I hit the trails more often. Next to my bootcamp training and marathon training I like to run the more hilly parts in the cold. This always gets my blood pumping faster and it is just awesome running through the woods in winter. Just makes that hot coffee or chocolate more rewarding!

  82. Tonny Madsen

    In Denmark, the winter isn’t too bad: -10 C to +5 C
So a pair of long tights, a pair of gloves and possibly a balaclava – and I’m good.
If the roads get very icy, you just run a little slower 🙂

  83. Fabrice ANCEL

No real change for swimming and running.
For cycling, a dedicated winter bike. And when weather is really unfriendly, some home-trainer sessions.

  84. Andrew Lagodzinski

I’m lucky to live in California so not much adjustment is needed.

  85. John

I’m Scottish – Winter is no harsher than any other season so no adaption required 🙂

  86. alexey

    running despite -20C and wind.

  87. mac

Winter means strapping on the skates and skis!

  88. Amanda

I join a running group to keep me motivated in the winter. Worked last year and will do it again this year,

  89. Simon

Cold weather is the best weather! Long live cross-country skiing and running in the snow!

  90. Clay Archey

I’m a native lucky duck who lives in Central Florida. Aside from putting on an additional layer there is no difference in my training. Record low for workout was 28 deg record high is 104.

  91. Jorge D.

Sunny FL for the win… just a long sleeve shirt on those evening runs that I take off half-way anyways. 🙂

  92. Adam

Usually I do a lot of gym/yoga in the winter! This year I’m going to be on the trainer a lot more training for a long ride in June. 🙂

  93. John

Ease off on the road cycling, more stuff in the gym and choose running paths carefully when the ice arrives.

  94. Jonathan

I migrate to the gym and do mostly treadmill and spin bike workouts. Keep up the good work Ray!

  95. Maryann

Living in the Northeast US, I trade the running sneakers for snowshoes and cross-country skis!

  96. Paul S

This winter, I’m finally paying attention to strength training and upper body/core work, which I’ve generally neglected in favor of just going running. Will be doing a bodyweight fitness routine at home, and just signed up for a monthly climbing gym membership!

  97. Bert

    Trainer… until it’s above freezing

  98. Luis Leautaud

Add an extra km or two at the beginning for warmup, including some stretching movements on the run. Start with three layers on top, and take off one (goose down vest when too cold) as soon as I finished the warmup. Immediatly after running, put the top layer back on and do stretches with it on. Also, since I’m bald, use a buff on the head to prevent extra heat loss.

  99. Dan Klotzbach

I still will run and ride outside till conditions prevent that, then I shall take to the trails or worst case the dreadmill and trainer.
