Upcoming local DC running races (plus one in Cali)

I got an e-mail from Pacers a few days ago with a list of a few major/minor upcoming running races in the DC area.  These are the ‘official’ dates, now that the event dates are confirmed.  So mark your calendars!

I’ve done the GW 10 miler, and it’s lots of fun and a great local race (also mostly downhill).  While I haven’t run the GW 10K race itself, I have run the course a gazillion times since my place is on the route.  It’s a flat/fast course.

I’m planning on doing the Jingle Bell 10K as well, in hopes of cleanly breaking the 40 minute barrier (I did a 40:12 during the Nation’s Oly Tri – if only I had known how close I’d been, I would have run a touch harder).

The 1 Mile race is new this year, but should be a blast.  Like an all out drag race, straight down King street (just a touch downhill).  I’m still trying to figure out which continent/country/coast I’m going to be in/on that day, but if I’m here – I’m definitely doing it.

December 9th, 2007:
Jingle Bell 10K
Washington DC

December 31, 2007 – 5PM:
King Street Mile
Alexandria, VA

February 16, 2008:
GW Birthday 10K
Alexandria, VA

March 29, 2008:
Run vs. Row 10K
Alexandria, VA

April 6, 2008:
Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run
Washington DC

April 27, 2008:
George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile and 5K
Alexandria, VA

May 10, 2008:
Battle of the Boulevard 10K
Arlington, VA

Most of these you can register pretty much whenever, but I would expect that the 1 Miler will sell out it’s 200 spots relatively soon.  Cherry Blossom also sells out pretty quickly once it opens.

And finally, for something completely unrelated – I got a coupon code in the mail for the LA Marathon (March 2nd, 2008) – which gets you $15 off the price.  To use it, just go to the registration site and enter in HEARTLA.  Note, this EXPIRES 12/1/2007 at 11:59PM PST.  If you enter in HEARTLABIKE it gets you $5 off the other events during that weekend.  I don’t plan on going, but hopefully this helps out someone!

  1. Yo Rainmaker – congrats on a smokin’ Philly Half. Looks like you’ve got some great races on the docket coming up. My goal for 07 was to finish a couple ultras, which I did at 50K and 50 miles. I also set PRs in 10 miles (1:20) and half-marathon (1:51). For the sake of wife and kids(backing off marathon and beyond), I am looking for 08 to be a PR year for 10 and halfs. If you are looking, the Annapolis Striders host some great races throughout the year–including a flat full and half marathon in March. And my huge hope is to get some great trail races in as well. Hope to run into at one race or another. Best, Mike V.

  2. A 1 miler should be a fun race, all out for a few minutes, HR in the red zone… Never seen one of these around my area, but will look for them in the local running room perhaps.

  3. I’ll be doing the Alexandria Turkey Trot (5 miler) tomorrow, likely the Jingle 10k, GW Parkway 10 Miler, and I’m sure much much more. The good news is that most of those races (except Cherry Blossom) will stay open for a little while. Looking forward to breaking my PR (1:13) at the GW Parkway on that fast course!

  4. Looks like a great lineup! Hmm, I’ll have to think of coming back to DC for some of these…. nothing scheduled for me until B&A in Annapolis in March!
