A November Garmin (Fancy) Fenix3 Giveaway

IMG_9544

It’s somehow already halfway through November, and we’ve lacked a giveaway this month.  Heck, did we even have a giveaway last month? That seems like eons ago.  My bad.

No worries though, I’m here to save the day.  Or at least, save Tuesday.  I’ll be giving you a Fenix3.  But not any Fenix3, one of their newfangled fancy looking Fenix3 watches.  Had I thought this post through a little bit more, I could have put it on Friday, and named it the ‘Fancy Fenix3 Friday Freebie’, but alas – I didn’t think of that until now as I write on the plane.  My mental schedule is set for the week, and here it is.

In any case, they released these ones back a few months ago.  One is more of a leather strap, and the other more womanly with swanky rose gold trimmings.  Though honestly, it’s still kinda a big watch for a woman – so if you’re more petite – I’ll let you downsize and pick some other GPS watch that Clever Training stocks, even if it might not look as pretty and be lacking the flower power.

Since I landed in a snowy place this evening, we’re going to get you thinking about winter. To enter, simply leave a quick comment with an answer to the following:

How do you adapt your training schedule for winter? Do you change sports altogether, or do you happen to be one of those lucky ducks living in Hawaii?

Giveaway closes Friday evening, November 20th at 11:59PM US Eastern Time.

Oh – and by the way – I’m piloting a bit of a new option for folks to support the blog.  Many of you have asked for a way to simply support more directly than via Amazon or Clever Training purchases.  Now you can!  If you become a DCR Supporter™ (no, not really trademarked) you’ll help support things around these parts.  More tangibly though, you’ll get a totally ad-free site.  Although you’ll still have to put up with my occasional rosé wine inspired tech rants.  And pictures of the food I eat.  And my travels.  None of those disappear.

I use PayPal as a processing provider, but you need not have a PayPal account (it takes any credit card).  I don’t store your credit card info, nor do I sell/giveaway your e-mail/info.  But obviously you’re creating an account here to sign-in (so you can be super-special going forward and skip the ads).  But to be SUPER CLEAR – you need not sign-up to enter the giveaway.  As will ALWAYS be the case, my regular giveaways are free to enter.

You can also sign-up for just my newsletter – which is a roughly once a week collection of my posts and a few additional tidbits.  Again, another thing that a gazillion of you have asked for for many years.  Simply hit up the checkbox at the bottom.

With that – thanks for reading, and the support!  And of course, as always, thanks to Clever Training for giving away some really pretty watches!  You can always save 10% with them via the DCR Coupon Code or VIP program.

FOUND THIS POST USEFUL? SUPPORT THE SITE!

Hopefully, you found this post useful. The website is really a labor of love, so please consider becoming a DC RAINMAKER Supporter. This gets you an ad-free experience, and access to our (mostly) bi-monthly behind-the-scenes video series of “Shed Talkin’”.

    GIVEAWAYYYYYYY

Well, I’m trying to swim more … trying. And I get my mountainbike out in stead of my road bike 😉

  2. Kevin

I’m blessed with sun (and rain) all year. Live near the equator. My equivilant of winter, haze from Indonesia.. : (

  3. Nebel

I’ll proceed with the training plan as previously. I just pay more attention to what I wear during my running sessions.

  4. Paul

Living in Newcastle Australia there is minimal adaption of training required for winter as it rarely gets below 10C. Some extra clothing is about it.

  5. Anton Z

    Base training – running.

  6. Slowmo

    Indoor training all the way

  7. Jeremy

Thanks for the giveaway, Ray! Despite the icy and harsh conditions, I try to plough on in the winter. Usually, that means more clothing and a headlamp since the darkness comes more quickly.

  8. Mark Yancey

I’ll move the bike to the basement and hit the gym a bit more.

  9. Matt Leary

Despite living in the southernmost state of Australia winter still isn’t that bad so I just rug up a little and attempt to still do as many km’s as possible.

  10. Rob

San Diego .. nothing to worry about

  11. Mike

More time on the indoor trainer.

  12. Bojan Kljakic

I usually don’t change anything but catch a cold every month or two.

  13. Alexander

I pile on layer upon layer of chlotes for the run. Bike is trainer only during the times of slippery surfaces.

  14. g mauch

Off the gym and in the man cave on the Kickr will be the winter routine. Not as fun as being outdoors but keeps the pounds from jumping back on me over the winter.

  15. Szymczak

    I switch to running only

  16. Michael

As I am not living in Hawaii, the only thing which is going to be changed is the amount of the clothes wearing during my training sessions. 😉

  17. Matthew C

Whilst it’s warming up in oz, layering up is key for surviving the winter chills. Highly recommend the Castelli gabba jerseys.

  18. Peter VB

Going into my sixth season of triathlon, I’ve finally decided on learning to swim properly… So should the weather turn ugly the upcoming months, the pool is were I’ll be…

  19. Stijn Vranken

Luckily the winters here (Western part of Belgium) are quite mild. I keep on running/cycling outdoors. And i’ve always had (inherited might be a better word) this stupid ideoligy that only the weak are hiding from Winter/bad weather (bad influence from friends). Only if the roads are covered with fallen leaves(cycling) or the there is ice/snow on the roads(cycling/running) I tend to keep my training indoors. Gyms aren’t really my scene. Too crowded, too much distractions (beautiful girls 😉 ),…

Otherwise outdoors we go!!! Even if it would freeze downwards of -5 °C. But frankly i prefer training in the Winter! It offers that extra mental challenge to keep going!

  20. Michael Fechtig

Nice Giveaways are allways great! I will be spending most of the winter in the pool to get back in shape. Additionaly 1-2 times one the Tacx should help to keep the legs fit.

  21. Wouter De Raeve

My routine is very simple: go the the hardware store, buy batteries for the headlight, go running :-). It also gives me a good feeling to continue, it makes me think of myself as more badass :-).

  22. The main change is no more open water swimming (boo) and the bike is on the trainer, so no more outside riding. Running stays about the same, just with more layers!

  23. Ruwan

I have taken my training indoors, treadmill running, indoor cycle, and swimming. I’m doing more swimming and cycling.

  24. ian

I wear a coat and call it done.

  25. sean

Same routine, just doing more of it indoors.

  26. PABLO

In Argentina is summer, but the winter is the best time to train for me.

  27. TR

I usually skip the cycling part for the spring, since I don’t like the cycling in the cold (perhaps a small workout here and there if the temperature is above 10°C).

But for the running, I actually prefer the colder winter weather over spring/summer heat, the difference is that I might grab an extra sheet of clothing or switch from shorts to something longer and warmer as the temperature goes towards 0°C. But this winter is supposed to be quite mild in Central Europe, so I’m looking forward to more running sessions without snow (if my Garmin FR110 doesn’t mist and lets me do that).

  28. Tyler

I plan on scaling back on the conditioning to one or two bouts per week, mostly sprints and ergo rowing, while increasing the strength training. A pyramid is only as tall as its base and strength is the base.

  29. Benjamin Gordon

Turbo trainer and quality time spent with Netflix.

  30. Glad you and your friends are ok. Walking 5 miles a day and swimming 1000 yards recovering from back surgery at age 75

  31. Paul Frylink

Living in Australia, it is just coming in to summer now 🙂
And living in sub-tropical Brisbane means the only change for me is getting out earlier before it gets too hot!

  32. Juro

Here Down Under, we are looking forward to longer days, longer runs, longer rides…

  33. Spiked tyres on the bike. That is all.

  34. a_circelli

more swimming, more running, zero bike!

  35. Rob Hoyt

I was able to find a couple of other people who are just as crazy as I am to train through the winter with me. Plus signing up for Ultras you can’t skimp on the training.

  36. I am a cyclist, but during the winter months I shift a bit towards running / trail running (2-3x a week), while I keep one or two trainer sessions with the bike too (especially now with Zwift). If the roads are dry (and the temperature does not drop below the freezing point) I also ride outside here and there. Last February I was lucky enough to work in Santa Barbara, CA for a month, and I did some pretty serious riding before/after work and over the weekends, now the weather there was a ‘bit’ different to the ‘challenging conditions’ we usually have here in Belgium at that time of the year. But in any case, inside or outside, running or biking, living by Rule #5 is what really matters 😉

  37. Siarhei

I have my tacx trainer for the winter “rides”.

  38. Amy

I adapt to the weather of Michigan and continue to run, try to stay off the dreadmill during the winter.

  39. Rolf Babijn

During the winter I usually run and cycle less than in the summer. I will continue to swim and I usually replace the outdoor sports with group lessons like TRX or KickFun.

  40. Paul Kreidler

Winters in St. Louis aren’t too bad, but I will add more workout classes and swims, and cut back on the cold, dark runs since I’m at work during our 9 hours of daylight.

  41. Levente Varga

I love to run in the winter, so its less biking and more running during these months. 🙂

  42. Tomasz K

Winter in Glasgow is pretty mild so I carry on cycling to work every day (26km one way) throughout the whole year. From November to April it’s more wet and windy than through the rest of the year (gales up to 70-90 miles per hour during the storms, which happen quite often in the winter here). Winter cycling here is like constant battle with the weather.
This obviously means couple more layers and definitely waterproofs. Overshoes are very handy as well.
Bike needs to be cleaned on daily basis and even then I need to replace chain, cassette, chainset after every winter – this is due to all the grid they put on the roads to keep them ice/snow free.
Although roads are pretty well maintained during the winter the walkways are actually terrible. Nobody clears ice and snow from the walkways so running is actually pretty dangerous. On cold days I need to run in the gym – if it’s above zero and it’s just wet I carry on running outside. Again couple more layers, long tights and I’m ready to battle the weather again.
Winter can be beautiful in the Scottish mountains so as often as I can I go hiking. I actually prefer to go in the winter as the air is less humid and views are better – that if the weather allows you to see anything.

  43. Alexandre Passant

Turbo trainer, and more pool sessions

  44. Jirat

What is winter? No need to change anything here in Bangkok, Thailand where it feels like summer all-year-round. 😉

  45. sherry m

Double up on layers when I run outdoors, and continue with my crossfire gym

  46. Dave

The only adaptation i make is gloves and a hat

  47. Daniela Spiroska

I just wear warmer clothes. On really cold or icy days, I may run on the treadmill.

  48. Gabriel

    Jus layering up!
    Layers, layers, layers

  49. Nick Yanakiev

Given that I am based in the UK, I have moved most of my training indoors. However, I do have a warmer kit at the ready for some friendly 5-a-side football!

Still, winters here do tend to be quite mild so having an umbrella and a warmer jacket does the job well enough more often than not.

  50. During winter I do less running and at a slower pace. Preferably during lunchtime when it is a bit warmer. Without the races and the hard training sessions I have more energy, so I do a bit more strength training and stretching.

  51. Nikolas

Just a layer for rain/ cold and it is ok here in Greece

  52. Tami

other than not biking outside (i have spin class for that) i continue to run and hike here in New Hampshire all winter long. I do add in more strength training to fill in the days

  53. Damon

It gets too cold in winter to motivate myself to go outside. I stick to the indoor rowing machine and a run on the weekend.

  54. DT

    Wahoo and treadmill it is!!

  55. Carlos

Living in Germany, I have to ride indoors on my trainer (with trainer road). Because of that, I reduce the cycling volume a bit and swim more during the winter. For running, I try to sneak out for a run during lunch time at work whenever possible to catch some sunlight. When this is not possible, I run at night with a headlamp and several layers of warm clothes.

  56. Matthew

keeping it fun by changing completely and going winter swimming outdoors.

  57. Erik Orberg

I will simply hope for the best and that it stays warm. I just bought a tri bike so it’d be nice to be able to ride it outside for a few more months!

  58. Since I’m a triathlete and a cross country skier I first give my body a good 3-4 weeks rest after my last race for the season. Then I have about a month of intensive strength workout to build upper body strength for the cross country training. Then it really depends on the weather conditions… I live in Sweden, but lately snow hasn’t been a commodity in Stockholm as it used to be. I really don’t like roller skiing so until real snow hits I continue on with the base training for next season of triathlon. As soon as the first snow falls I change 90 % of my running sessions and 20 % of my cycling sessions into cross country skiing. I leave the swimming as is, because I’ve experienced good synergy between the two sports. As soon as cross country competition season is over I go into my first triathlon build period to get ready for the first tri-race in about 8 weeks.

  59. dimakor

Living in Russia, I’ll switch to xc ski, but will run from time to time. Also, there is plan to do more gym this winter, but not sure i’ll have enough time.

  60. Max

Pennsylvania here. I’ll still run outside when it’s not snowy or icy, but when the weather gets bad (which happens more and more each year…), I’m usually stuck inside with my elliptical and a glass of brandy.

  61. Nothing just train the same

  62. Ron

I still run outside but I put my bike on a trainer in my basement.

  63. Coach Josh

During the week it’s often dark when I leave the house and when I get home, so I end up on the treadmill. On the weekend it’s easier to dodge the icy patches when you can see them.

  64. Martin

I live in Lille, northern France. Sunset occurs at 4:59pm and things are getting cold windy. So I try to keep on training 3 or 4 Times a week during lunch break. After work i usually do what we call PPG in France, which stands for “Préparation Physique Générale” ( push ups, muscular strengthening).

Receiving a fancy Fenix 3 Will allow me to run in the dark i hope.

Anyway have good winter you all. Stay healthy and safe.

  65. Luís Ferreira

Here in Portugal we generaly don’t have snow so i can still cycling but not that often because of rain. In that days turbo trainer it’s the answer…

  66. yonah

I live in the Northeastern US, where we do get a winter. I try to run outdoors 3x a week – not matter the weather. So long as it’s not snowing and the temp is above 25 degrees Fahrenheit, I will get my run in. In fact, I think that the cold makes me run faster!

  67. Angel

I live in Calabria, south of Italy, and I have the luck to virtually run every day also if it’s raining or winding, I just cover up with gloves, sunglasses, hat, kway…

  68. James

    Less biking, more running

  69. Christian Nieroda

Just put on more clothes and keep running!

  70. stuart prosser

Living in Oman the weather is now perfect for winter training after spending the summer training indoors or in a chilled pool, so summer running clothes/ suntan lotion and a hat are a must heading outside for the start of middle east triathlon and marathon season.

  71. Roman

I ride my kinetic road machine and spend time in the park!

  72. Chris

I mountain bike and run more. I usually also work on my winter coat a bit more too with all the holiday food and drink.

  73. Christian Bedsvaag

I usually do some biking on my trainer. But mostly i keep running and switch my bikerides to cross-country skiing.

  74. Ryan

I join the gym and use the indoor track for the coldest months.

  75. Mark Yeo

Living here in sunny Singapore means business as usual on all training fronts!

  76. Kyle Pennell

Living in Florida I just wear an extra layer if I go out early. Or I actually get to run midday.

  77. Damien

Living in London, winter can be difficult to live with. Cold? I can cope with. Darkness? I can cope with. Rain? I can cope with. Wind? I ………. simply cannot bear wind!!!! And god knows London is windy in winter especially as we live near the Thames. Being lucky to have our local gym next door to us I therefore hit the treadmill more often than not. But you know what? I quite like my treadmill runs. I challenge myself more easily on a treadmill and do not have to worry about winter hazards.

  78. MikeB

I keep running outside, but my biking moves almost exclusively indoors.

  79. Chris Tomlinson

My sport is field hockey so no change to my plans as the outdoor season runs from September to March. Just make sure you’re wearing the right layers for the inevitable wind, rain or cold in the UK.

  80. Seb

I usually do 3-4 running workout every week but during Winter I keep be trained with gym workout and swimming pool. Leaving just 1 running workout per week (especially with treadmill). I need to be focused on strength in order to be spring ready for heavy cardio training.

  81. Gadi

Just run and bike outside. Here it is much pleasant to exercise in the winter.

  82. Kirk

I live on the coast in South Carolina so lucky enough not to have to change my routine too much, mostly train an hour later or so to let the sun rise.

  83. Harry Charlton

I ride until it snows. More structured training on the trainer.

  84. Susan

In Houston so the main issue year around is thunderstorms. Running and swimming continue as normal, but with more clothes for running. Layering and I use the trainer a bit more for biking.

  85. Trond Pedersen

Here in Norway, winter means more indoor swimming, time on the turbo trainer (got an early xmas present, the Tacx Neo!), more running, and skiing (cross country, randonee, hit the slopes).

  86. der Nate

    Hi Ray

I’ll be skipping the interval runs for the next few months and focusing more on base building. And, if the weather cooperates, I’ll get in some good snowshoe running (and racing).

    Nathan

  87. A lot of turbo training on weekdays and even some short running to keep up the form

  88. Konstantinos Michopoulos

Keep the schedule, no matter the season. Lucky me, see Greek weather forecast!

  89. Jim

I go to the pain cave and hit the treadmill/trainer

  90. Trygve Haaland

Winter season means switching over to more running and the occational oldboys soccer practice. When we get snow in the closeby mountains, some skiing is also good to break up the running routine.

  91. Brendan

In Ireland it can be as wet in summer as winter so just keep on running. An extra layer or two if it’s chilly and a head torch for the early morning darkness.

  92. Tim G

Running in The Woodlands, TX is great… in the winter. I hope to restore my pace to the PR zone as I prepare for my first marathon.

  93. John Kissane

Treadmill gets more use as dark now when I finish work.

  94. Sean Dooley

I get outside more, I love the cold.

  95. MrFlux

I put on leg warmers and keep going.

  96. Living in Alaró, Mallorca I would say that it is quite the opposite. It is in the winter when most of the enjoyable training can be done, trail running in the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana or riding the bike down to Sa Calobra with no tourist buses.
Swimming in the sea can be challenging… but since I pretty much stick to pools it is not my problem.

If you ever need a guide around the mountain do not hesitate to let me know!

  97. Traveling around a lot. Being in places that, even now, have crappy weather you adapt or you learn to survive. I do both. I run when it’s cold outside, raining like hell. The combination of gusty wind and rain is the only thing that can stop. I cycle as long as it is safe. I swim in a lake if the water temp is above 10-12 degrees. I’m adding snowboarding whenever I can. And, for last 5 years of doing that, not even a day with a cold or a flu…

  98. Artur

    Winter = KICKR + TrainerRoad

  99. When the rain goes tough, the tough runs faster!

  100. victor china

I live in Eilat, Israel, so for me winter actually means i can go out and run without feeling like i am running inside a hair dryer!
