Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras/Drones/Action Cams I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds (including drones & action cams!)! It’s a nice break from the day-to-day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
Why would data companies open up to a company that does not share anything? This feels more like The Horse of Troy. You let the enemy in and they will take over. Or Whoop is hoping for a management buy out/take over.
Not sure I follow? Apple Health is pretty open in that it has a pretty well defined API.
Now, we can argue (validly) about how well sports/fitness data plays in that sandbox, or that Apple themselves doesn’t do a good job around best practices for using it, or even that Apple themselves does a poor job at playing well with others.
But in terms of whether or not 3rd parties can access Apple Health data, that’s pretty open. Plus, this isn’t about letting Apple access it – it’s about letting users own their data. And up till a few months ago, Whoop users didn’t really own their own data. Or at least, couldn’t viably access it (it took me a year and numerous threats to get a GDPR request fulfilled).
Maybe they are more open around Apple health, but their track record on the apple store and payments is pretty poor( dating apps are one of the worst). I never used apple health since I dont see any benefit of prevailing it above strava or garmin. So if they want to play along, they need a bit more of a kick start… but maybe it is more a general feeling from me than actual facts…. open to learn :)
I can tell you with any one of a number of third party apps (HealthFit, RunGap, etc), it has been easier for me to move my data in and out of Apple Health than just about any other platform. (to/from just about anything out there).
As an iPhone user, anyone who plugs into that system gets a thumbs up from me.
Whoop does have an API, but it is not public. There is a yearly fee for access to this non-public API and the straps that make use of the API have a higher subscription cost.
I wish it would import more of the old data. I wore a Whoop 3.0 for close to 2 years (having already purchased it before reading Ray’s review). While I haven’t worn it since May of 2021, I am a completionist and would have loved if it it would backfill all the data I had. While Garmin is my preferred for actual activity tracking, I have been most happy with Apple Health + Apple Watch + Withings Scale/BPM Connect for a central dumping ground of information.
