DC Rainmaker

Something look funny? Read this newsletter online!

Hello!

This is The Girl, writing to you for the DC Rainmaker weekly newsletter. If you are a new to the DCR newsletter, you can catch up with the newsletter archives here. The newsletter is supposed to be a light hearted piece of literature in your inbox recounting the notable information Ray sent out for the world last week. Sometimes I even succedd at doing it more than two weeks in a row.

The big sprint 20% off sale is still happening at Clever Training! And you NEED to pay attention here. The sale ends tomorrow night, May 23rd, 11:59:59pm EST. I think every brand at this point has turned the lights on for the sale in some manner. GoPro has hopped on board with the Hero Black 5, Garmin with the Fenix 5/5X/5s (my fav being the 5S that I use), and every indoor bike trainer you can think of is playing ball. So if you were thinking of dropping a boatload of fancy bills on something like the Tacx Neo, now is the time. There won’t be sales like this again until Black Friday.

All of the details on the sale are here in this post, including a bunch of new products added in the last 24-72 hours. Like, 30% off all Suunto stuff, and even the new AeroPod aerodynamic thingy is on sale.

VIP SALE

Moving on!

Ray has a respectable week of work behind him. A lot of time was committed to this on going investigation of work space. I can proudly tell you that we are signing on a cave-esq place this week and moving in on June 1st! GIANT WOOOOWHOOOO! But I won’t spoil the details for Ray. You’ll have to stay tuned for all the goods straight from the source (once the thing is finally signed).

For actual “Bloggable” work, Ray got down and dirty with the Road Grand Tours. He’s been following these guys for a few years now, and they just launched a new update. As most of you know, I loathe being on an indoor trainer so I didn’t pay a lot of attention to this post. However, when I poke my head in on Ray’s recent training sessions and see these virtual reality style workouts, it’s starting to create some interest for me. Don’t get excited, I didn’t say I liked it, but it seems less miserable than 10 years ago biking on my Computrainer

Continuing with indoor training style posts, Ray followed up with a piece on “What’s Baseline for a SmartTrainer” in 2018. It took me a minute to decode what that title even meant. Ray is giving you a bit of update for what a user should expect for their money from a “Smart Trainer” of any brand. From humble my point of view, I am starting to appreciate that one thing Ray enjoys most about his job as a tech blogger and analyzer is getting to advocate for the athletes/product users. Recently Ray gave a talk at the Garmin Symposium to developers about making “cool shit” and pushing boundaries to get there.

As part of the trainer post he was basically reminding companies as they go to Eurobike that there’s a responsibility there if you’re going to charge people for their hard-earned dollars to include what are now considered these “Baseline items”.

Then, two of the blog’s most popular posts hit the newsstands. DC Rainmaker’s “Week in Review”. Basically Ray’s round up of things he found interesting/excuse for perusing the interwebs when he should be working or helping wash 90,000 baby bottles that magically continue to pile up?? There is a link in there about an Astronaut who forgot his SD Card for the GoPro… fail. So go check it out.

The other popular post is the “5 Random Things” piece. I was away this past weekend on a Momma Escapes to Vienna trip with another Mom-girlfriend, so I was excited to see what Ray posted as well! This was my 5th night away from the Peanut ever, and 2nd night away from P2. A much much needed break, and I think Ray really enjoyed having some freedom with the girls as well. I see there was ice cream involved which was a real daddy-treat.

Other than blogging, remember Ray also has that YouTube channel. This is handy to know if you don’t actually want to read entire blog posts, when you could likely get a lot of the same info by playing a video in the background as you do your work. For example the entire Grand Tours post can be summed up by this video Ray did. Really, it’s just up to you what you fancy.

Now is the part of the newsletter where I send you to “below the fold” to read the In-Depth Thoughts from The Girl.

In-Depth Thoughts from The Girl

Hey! Thanks for still reading the part of the newsletter that has nothing to do with sports tech!

This week’s newsletter has taken a real effort as I’m juggling two kiddos at home sick. The writing of this piece has been done between doctor’s appointments, naps, and administering of medicines that neither child appreciates the healing powers of! But, I have made it to week 4 of consecutive newslettering and I’m proud of that! I even had a friend message me that he was enjoying the newsletter, but actually thought the last once was an accidental “re-publish” of sorts, liken to a middle of a drunken night butt dial. He was pleasantly surprised to read it was in fact new content!

I have to say a massive thank you to everyone who has sent emails! I WILL respond to everyone of you. But in the meantime, here is a general thank you. It really is motivating to hear from you and why you like the newsletter. I really like writing it, but it’s intimidating on many levels! There are a lot of you out there reading! What if you don’t like my dorky humor? I guess you can always unsubscribe :)

In the meantime, I’m happy to announce that I am starting to take on a bigger role at the DCR “empire”! I was giving Ray a hard time about his inability to delegate monotonous work to others, as he spends a lot of time doing small tasks when he could be spending time as a family man.

But at the same time we were hesitant to hire an employee as work wouldn’t always be consistent and reliable. So it’s tough to find good help, when you can’t even make a good description of what the job entails. We have also always hesitated on the two of us working together as that can be super stressful for any couple to work together, parent together, and cohabitate together. At the end of the day, we needed to make a decision, do we continue to let Ray drown in all of the things he is responsible for, or can we get him a little support.

We voted for a summer internship of sorts for “The Girl” (that's...uhh...me) and see how it works out. Have no fear, I will still have ZERO part of reviewing technological devices. I’m taking on all the other fun things from making best friends with the DHL guy, accounting, the newsletter, maybe an occasional Amsterdam Life post, and many other non-glamourous roles. With hopes of freeing up more time for Ray to spend with the Peanuts as well as getting more opinions out there on sports technology that interests you! Capiche?

Hope you enjoyed this installment of the May 22nd Newsletter!

~The Girl.
