Week in Review–August 11th, 2012

WeeklyMailbagIcon_thumb4_thumb_thumb[1]The Week in Review is a collection of both all the goodness I’ve written during the past week around the internet, as well as a small pile of links I found interesting – generally endurance sports related. I’ve often wondered what to do with all of the coolness that people write, and while I share a lot of it on Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus, this is a better forum for sending it on to y’all. Most times these different streams don’t overlap, so be on the lookout at all these places for good stuff!

So with that, let’s get into the action!

Paris blog posts this past week:
Here’s all the Parisian fun we’ve been having on our Paris sub-blog. This week we look at all of the craziness involved with getting our stuff into the apartment:

Wednesday: Paris Blog- A time-lapse video–Moving into the apartment in 40 seconds (and what happens when a

Stuff that I found interesting around the interwebs:
Here’s a not-so-small smattering of all the random things that I stumbled on while doing my civic duty to find the end of the Internet:

1) The Olympic Village – One Gigantic Sex Party: A look inside the village and some of the stuff that doesn’t quite make NBC’s evening prime time broadcast coverage.

2) New Garmin Vector timeline says end of year: As part of their earnings call, Garmin noted that they continue to see manufacturing quality issues with the pedal based power meter – but hope to have it out by end of year. [Me prediction: I think they’ll do what Polar did – seed a small number of units later this year to normal buyers, and then mass market next spring.]

3) What it’s like to get a triathlon penalty in the Olympics: A really well written piece by Olympian medalist Jonathan Brownlee himself on getting the penalty in the race, as well as his subsequent medal.

4) Sand at Olympics is ‘special’, won’t stick to athletes: I had wondered the other day why it seemed like none of the sand stuck to them despite all their dives into it.  Crazy post!

5) The Beijing 2008 Olympic Venues – 4 years later: Kinda makes you sad.  Though, there were some shots that weren’t entirely fair from a dramatic and/or lighting standpoint (i.e. the Aquatics Cube looks just as nice, just light color was different).  Still, sad overall.

7) An interesting perspective on bending the rules while cycling: Some good points are raised in this article about when it’s ‘OK’ or not to bend the rules while riding – and the double-standard that exists with cars and pedestrians.

8) Can’t figure out which sports/health monitoring device you want? Well, start with this nifty little table that lines up with where you want the device (wrist, headband, shirt, etc..) – then some of the options.  Kinda neat.

9) New wristband can tell when you’re about to be sunburned: Would be really cool to see this integrated into the band of a GPS watch – to serve as a reminder for those of us that may spend hours in the sun.

10) Costa Rican that was taken out by Canadian Simon Whitfield sends a message to Whitfield: What’d he say?  Well, it might just surprise ya.

Sports Technology Software/Firmware Updates This Week:
Each week I quickly highlight some of the new firmware, app, software and website service updates that I see go out. If you’re a sports technology company and release an update – shoot me a quick note (just one liners is perfect, or Tweet it at me) and I’ll make mention of it here. If I don’t know about it, I won’t be able to post about it. Sound good?

IpWatts Application can record multiple ANT+ power meters: There’s a cool story behind this app.  Back a few weeks ago I noted in a post that I was desperate for a way to display and record multiple ANT+ power streams to a simple .CSV file.  Sure enough, a develop came along and developed an Android app for me.  Works great!  You have no idea how much easier this makes my job. He also posted it to the Android marketplace for free.  Note, you’ll need an Android phone that supports ANT+, like the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active.

Nike Fuel App Updated: The app that connects to the Nike+ Fuel watch now does it’s thing faster.

Thanks all for reading! Have a great weekend ahead!

  1. You can get ANT support on an Android Phone using a USB ANT stick if your phone supports USB Host mode which looks to be most modern ones. I am seeing a remarkably quick rise of Galaxy S III users with IpBike. The pressure sensor and big battery makes it good candidate for a bike computer.

    Thanks for this preview!

Being in the market for a Polar watch and contemplating the RCX5 Tour de France edition, this article made me wonder…

What do you think of the current RCX5’s product life span? Do you think that an update will be announced in the short term (as in: less than 6 months?)

  3. doug watson

when’s your fenic reviee coming out? inquiring minds ate restless…

  4. On the Fenix Review – once I’ve got the final firmware. There were changes made to the Fenix hardware over the past several weeks to address some altitude issues. Meanwhile, software is still being updated weekly (usually now software drops on Friday). As a result, they are sending over a new hardware unit next week. Once the software is ‘done’, then I’ll go ahead and start putting together the review.

A swag at this point says early September – but it’s hard to say.

Regarding the RCX5’s life span – I think it’s pretty limited as well, I suspect we’ll see a GPS variant of it (like the RC3) come out sooner or later.
