Week in Review–March 31st, 2012

WeekInReviewLogo_thumb3_thumbThe Week in Review is a collection of both all the goodness I’ve written during the past week around the internet, as well as a small pile of links I found interesting – generally endurance sports related. I’ve often wondered what to do with all of the coolness that people write, and while I share a lot of it on Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus, this is a better forum for sending it on to y’all. Most times these different streams don’t overlap, so be on the lookout at all these places for good stuff!

So with that, let’s get into the action!

DCRainmaker.com posts this past week:
Here’s all the goodness that ended up on the main page of DCRainmaker.com this week:

Sunday: Week in Review – March 24th, 2012
Monday: A look at the 2012 Washington DC Multisport Expo
Tuesday: 2012 Equinox Indoor Triathlon Race Report
Wednesday: The $99 Timex Marathon GPS In-Depth Review
Thursday: How to kick butt in indoor triathlon races
Friday: The weekend ahead- Good stuff on tap!

Stuff that I found interesting around the interwebs:
Here’s a not-so-small smattering of all the random things that I stumbled on while doing my civic duty to find the end of the Internet:

1) Triathlete gear for beginners: I was quote a bit in this story on different options for triathlon technology.  The story was also published to Outside Magazine.

2) How to borrow a bicycle: A great post from Fatcyclist on the finer points of being on either end of the bicycle borrowing transaction.

3) Racing with Girls (cycling): A cool piece on the the women’s cycling race scene, as seen by one of the women in the fray.

4) San Diego ITU race to be broadcast (fully) on TV: This shouldn’t be too big of a surprise, since Universal has historically done the WCS ITU events.  But cool to see the mid-May race will be shown a week later on TV in its entirety (both men’s and women’s races).

5) A cycling tour through Tasmania: Some completely awesome photos and video included on this post as they cover cycling through Tasmania – really well shot and produced.

6) Bluetooth Bike Helmet Adapter: It’s sorta like Tunebug, except, well, without Tunebug.  Just remember folks – just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

7) Six-time Kona Champion Dave Scott to race in small DC area tri: I’m not exactly sure how this went down, or what favors Dave must have owed to someone – but Dave Scott will be racing in the Luray Triathlon this August, which is a small tri about 90 minutes outside of DC in the mountains.  (Great race btw, love the course!). (Via EverymanTri)

8) Santa Cruz aims to grab Ironman event in 2013: Some interesting details about a possible WTC event for next year.  Would love to see some more West Coast Ironman events.

9) Auto-rising bike seat device: Now, no Slowtwitch ‘your seat post is too high’ thread will ever be the same.

10) Live coverage of the Tour of Flanders on NBC Sunday morning at 8:30AM: Gotta love being at the start of the cycling season (live TV-wise anyway).

11) Rev3 adds new iron-distance Williamsburg, VA event: Sweet candy, just a 2hr drive outside of Washington DC (ok, 6 hours with traffic).  Next year, June 2013.

Sports Technology Software/Firmware Updates This Week:

I’m going to try something new where I quickly highlight some of the new firmware, app, software and website updates that I see go out, each week.  If you’re a sports technology company and release an update – shoot me a quick note (just one liners) and I’ll make mention of it here. Sound good?

CTANT+ releases updated version, adds more ANT+ support options to CompuTrainer

Inside Tracker adds testosterone testing to their nutrition/sports testing service

Kinomap adds HD videos to their trainer product, slew of other smaller features

TrainerRoad adds Peak Performance metrics to their site for post-ride analysis

Washington DC note of the week:

I wanted to focus a bit of attention on the Run for Shelter 10K taking place in front of my house later in April.  This event run in conjunction with Pacers, benefits Carpenters Shelter – a local non-profit organization.

At the moment I haven’t decided if I’m going to be able to fit it into my race schedule – but I can commit to being out there and cheering on race morning.  Heck – maybe The Girl will even be out there cheering again.  The route is fairly fast, and though it does have a bit of a rise in the first half (very very shallow rise), the second half is virtually all downhill.

Plus, as a bonus you’d get to see the cornerstone of every one of my local ‘from the house’ running routes.  That’s worth a bunch right there…like a least a couple bucks.

Hope to see ya out there!

Thanks for reading all, have a great weekend!

    Thanks!!

Since you are noting Software/Firmware Updates have you heard any new updates on the Garmin 500 firmware updates given that the latest word from Garmin was March?

    🙂

If you want to know how the Luray Triathlon secured Dave Scott for their race, I can get you in contact with the race director, who should know.
