Week in Review–October 8th, 2011

WeekInReviewLogo_thumb1_thumb_thumb_[2]The Week in Review is a collection of both all the goodness I’ve written during the past week around the internet, as well as a small pile of links I found interesting – generally endurance sports related. I’ve often wondered what to do with all of the coolness that people write, and while I share a lot of it on Twitter and Google Plus, this is a better forum for sending it on to y’all. Most times these different streams don’t overlap, so be on the lookout at all these places for good stuff!

So with that, let’s get into the action!

DCRainmaker.com posts this past week:
There’s no doubt TONS of interest in the FR910XT, and as such I’ve been busy answering questions and adding new sections to the review constantly. Good stuff abound!

Saturday: Week in Review–October 1st, 2011
Monday: A weekend running (a long way) around home
Tuesday: Garmin Forerunner 910XT In Depth Review
Thursday: The slow march towards more functional triathlon specific bikes
Friday: Shark Week…coming to my local swimming pool

Men’s Health/Gatorade/Urbanathlon Blog posts this past week:
In addition to all my writings here, I also cover a bunch of topics over on the Men’s Health Urbanathlon blog. Here’s the goods from the past week:

Wednesday: Mileage and Pacing in between obstacles

Note that I post over there roughly every Monday and Wednesday, and Sarah posts on Tuesday and Thursday. It’s a tag-team event.

Stuff that I found interesting around the interwebs:
Here’s a not-so-small smattering of all the random things that I stumbled on while doing my civic duty to find the end of the Internet:

1) The Business of Ironman Hawaii – Steve Fleck takes a good look at the business side of Kona, and what it means and has meant to some sports companies.

2) Wahoo Fitness starts a blog – The little company that keeps on chugging.  Good to see them enter the blog world, would love to see others join them.

3) iPhone 4S includes Bluetooth Low Energy – With the iPhone 4S now including BTLE, it’ll be interesting to see how the low-energy sensor market plays out (since it competes with ANT+).  I still think we’re talking a long way off until the two are truly ‘competing’ though in consumer devices, simply because there’s no BTLE devices out there today.

4) Bike-Car Proximity Sensor – I’ve recently been pondering some different ways of accomplishing something similar.  Interesting ideas to keep the two transportation mediums from colliding.

5) iPhone HR Sensor Thingmajig passes 10M users – I’ve used this a few times, and honestly, it’s kinda sucked compared to a standard HR strap.  Anyone else try it out?

6) Pro Cyclist in Tour of Beijing crashes due to helicopter – Well, actually, a helicopter that causes a bike to crash and in turn crash into him.  Talk about wanting to sing the Bad Day song.  And there’s even a YouTube video of it at 4:09.   (Via NY Velocity)

7) Bad cycling movie, coming soon to theatres near you.  But guys, you’ve just gotta think positively, at least you’re not being dragged to a chic-flick.  See…makes it seem better now, doesn’t it?

8) Bluetooth Wireless Bike Radio System: Ok, this devices seems sorta messed up in implementation – but the basic concept is something I’ve alluded to in the past.  Now it just needs to be better integrated with our bike head units and phones. (Thanks Victor for heads up)

9) New Samsung Galaxy Bike Accessory…the whole bike: I’m sure somewhere in a board room this made sense.  I’d just like to know exactly where that boardroom is, so that I can go there and justify whacky ideas of my own in the future.

10) London 2012 to Olympians: Walk Faster – An interesting little behind the scenes piece on the opening ceremony next summer in London.

11) Bike Babes at Interbike…a turnoff: An good piece on Bike Babes at Interbike, how it works behind the scenes and why they don’t always help the company.  I actually agree here.  For me, seeing Bike Babes at a booth means that in general the product probably can’t stand up by itself.  Just my two cents…

12) Live in DC and enjoy Bikeshare? Or Alexandria and want Bikeshare?  Well, they’re looking to expand a bit and Alexandria is going to have a council meeting on Tuesday to approve it.  Cyclist support wanted!  I might even be there!

13) One of the most photo filled 2012 Shiv Posts: For those folks looking for even more detailed pics of the 2012 Specialized Shiv, I think this is probably the best post I’ve seen to date, from TriRig.

14) New study and questions on if Vibram Five Fingers helps or hurts: Always good to have more information on topics, and barefoot running is certainly one of them.

15) Sports Registration Site Goes Under:  Then says they won’t pay back 60K in fees for cycling events…but decided to change their mind afterwards.  Worth a read.

16) New Sport Tracks plug-in for Pool-Mate Pro: Good to see a bit of integration with the Pool-Mate Pro happening.  Good stuff.

17) Bicycle Number Crunching…simply to go faster: It’s nice to see some of our more technical aspects of the sport making the mainstream press.  Good read.

18) A look at race fees and getting your money worth: Some thoughts on whether or not you get bang for your buck in races. A follow-up to an earlier July article written by same author.

19) The 2011 Kona Bike and Gear Count (yup, already!): One of the most sought after numbers of the year…hot off the presses from this morning!

20) Reminder: Live Ironman Tracking with ANT+ Data at SRM Live.  Really cool stuff. Looking forward to future expansion with other athletes.  Kona’s Saturday (today).  Starts at 1PM Eastern Time, 7AM Hawaii time.

Random Notes:

I’ve got nothing left for random notes this week, other than to say thanks for reading!

  1. So I see that they mentioned the iPhone 4.0, do you know if any companies are going to develop integration to this, runKeeper, garmin or such. On that do you know if this is ant+ or how similar to it is it?

  2. Companies would have to start developing devices for it. As of June, they had developed a few device profiles – including for example the heart rate strap. But not yet a profile for example for a power meter. But there are to my knowledge no actual BTLE HR straps out there today that a consumer can buy. So it’ll be a bit of a ways. But ultimately, they could buy a BTLE HR strap, and then an app like RunKeeper could/would code their application to support the BTLE device types. In the same way that some apps have been coded/updated to support ANT+ straps via the ANT+ dongle (or native support on some Android phones).

I use the HR app often, and tested it against a HR polar strap.
It came within 1 heart beat difference in my test, on a resting position (around 52 or 53 bpm).
    My 2 cents…

  4. Ray,

Thanks for the #1 suggested link last week. I am honored – led to a lot of page-views. Thank you.

Amazing content on your blog. It’s a bit overwhelming.

    Best regards,
