Have some fun in the travel section.
I travel a fair bit, both for work and for fun. Here’s a bunch of random trip reports and daily trip-logs that I’ve put together and posted. I’ve sorted it all by world geography, in an attempt to make it easy to figure out where I’ve been.
My Photography Gear: The Cameras and Equipment I Use Daily
The most common question I receive outside of the “what’s the best GPS watch for me” variant, are photography-esq based. So in efforts to combat the amount of emails I need to sort through on a daily basis, I’ve complied this “My Photography Gear” post for your curious minds! It’s a nice break from the day to day sports-tech talk, and I hope you get something out of it!
The Swim/Bike/Run Gear I Use List
Many readers stumble into my website in search of information on the latest and greatest sports tech products. But at the end of the day, you might just be wondering “What does Ray use when not testing new products?”. So here is the most up to date list of products I like and fit the bill for me and my training needs best! DC Rainmaker 2023 swim, bike, run, and general gear list. But wait, are you a female and feel like these things might not apply to you? If that’s the case (but certainly not saying my choices aren’t good for women), and you just want to see a different gear junkies “picks”, check out The Girl’s Gear Guide too.
This is a great post b/c I have newly been struggling w/ this now that I travel a lot for work. It’s interesting you noted the problems w/ traveling in groups. When i travel alone I have total food control; when I travel w/ groups or am attending client dinners…not so much! For me, it’s mostly about staying vigilant though it would certainly be easier if there weren’t chocolate desserts everywhere!!
Ray,
I used to travel for business a fair amount, but have cut down significantly in recent years (thank goodness). I admire your dedication to the sport — both your dietary choice and consistent training on the road.

Thanks for the great tips. I am really going to try and incorporate them on my next trip!
As an airline pilot I am on the road constantly. Most airports don’t have great choices so I always have a ready supply of reasonable protein / health bars when I simply can’t find an acceptable choice. At hotels and offsite restaurants the key is to ask dishes be modified. Fruit or veggies for fries, hold the cheese, ask for things to be grilled instead of fried etc. Almost every restaurant is happy to comply they just don’t promote that they will.
Great post! I do a lot of travel but most of it is road-tripping so my strategies are similar yet different – I HAVE to go buy tons of food before i leave so that I have healthy options available rather than eating interstate food! And of course I research options at my destinations!
my problem isn’t regular travel, but fitting training in around work schedules. days are long so i’m not getting to the pool in the morning, but on the flip side i’m not attending club training as i can’t get out at 6pm regularly.
i know i just need to get up early and go to pool. then in evening when i’m not at pool get out for run or bike.
last few weeks that just hasn’t worked – so need to be more disciplined in saying enough’s enough with work.
Great post, I have the same issue as I travel about the same as you.
The other tip I have is to throw a bunch of apples and /or fruit-based energy and snack bars into my suictcase in case I get a bit of a craving for something sweet.
Also, I’ve just bought a Garmin 310XT after having re-read your review. They seem to have changed the quick release since your review as it now re-uses the original watch band, and attaches to the bike with rubber bands making it easy to swap between bikes.
Thank you for a great read. This is one of my problems while traveling as an IT consultant. I want to stay fit, and eat correctly, but the foods on the highways or airports mostly are not healthy.
We all need to find the “Little” spots where you can get a healthy snack. 🙂
/Thomas
One of the best travel tips I got was to bring an empty water bottle through security. You can then fill it up at a water fountain…or if you’re lucky, lots of airports are starting to add or offer water bottle filling stations.
I’ve been using Yelp alot as well to search for juice/smoothie bars and vegetarian options. I stopped calorie ocunting and tend to prefer the high nutrition foods. On a recent trip to LA, I found an amazing juice bar with Yelp that was within reasonable walking distance of the food oasis around LAX.
For those inbetween snacks, trailmix is a good way to go. Just watch some of the sweet/sugar-filled ones.
A calorie counting app such as MyFitnessPal helps a lot. You don’t have to use it all the time, just use it enough to be aware of what an individual food choice will do to your daily calorie total.
This awareness has led me to carry Lara bars for lunch. A quick hit rather than a full mid day meal and I stay within my caloric limits.
Also, pregaming can provide a strategic defense against overeating or grazing at parties. Going out with a crowd for dinner? Grab a quick (healthy) bite before you go and order a light appetizer or salad at the dinner.
It’s okay to grab a brownie once in a while…but when I’m thinking about ice cream after a full meal, I think about my commitments to a healthy life style, to comfortably finishing the century ride or breaking the 2 hour mark in an upcoming half marathon. Commitment can win over addiction, if you are conscious of the choice.
I`m an airline pilot who flies for strange places as China, and enjoy healthy food. Is it hard for you ? Imagine for me!! Give you my tips.
1.In the airplane: A lot of water and take from home or hotel small snacks. A sandwich of salmon ,a boiled egg, quest nutrition protein bars, fruit, etc.
2.Breakfast in the hotel- Don`t look around .Look for what you are used to eat and stick to it. Easier if alrady know the hotel.
2.Other meals: There are always a salad available.Fruit is also easily available.Tale cans of sardines or atum.
3. and a lot of discipline
Really great post i feel you were talking to me
