JUMP TO:

Week in Review–November 21st, 2010

I’ve long since wondered what to do with all the random tidbits of things I collect each week – or the little thoughts that don’t quite make for a full post.  But I finally came up with a solution: The Week in Review Post.  This takes the place of my Weekly Mailbag – which is over on Slowtwitch.  These are just quick snippets of things that I’ve found interesting.  Nice and easy Saturday reading.  Plus, a recap of my Weekly Mailbag post a well.

So with that, let’s get into the action!

Weekly Mailbag Over at Slowtwitch.com:
If you’re looking for your usual Saturday fix of the Weekly Mailbag, it’s chillin’ over at Slowtwitch.  You can read it here.  And here’s the topics I covered this week are:

1) How to integrate a Road ID into your Garmin Forerunner 305
2) LeMond Revolution Trainer and ANT+ Distance Tracking
3) Timex Global Trainer and Cadence-Only Sensor

You can read all my past weekly mailbags at Slowtwitch here.  Or the pre-Slowtwitch days here.

Posts this past week:
It’s been a busy week for me, bouncing around Asia – at the airport now heading for my third (or is it fourth?) country this week, with still more over the next week.  Busy Busy!

In case you missed anything from the past 7 days, here ya have it.

Stuff that I found interesting around the interwebs:
As always, here’s a sampler platter of some of the interesting articles and posts I found around the Internet this week.

#1) Post on Masters Swimming in Tri Workouts.  While this is a re-print of an older article, it still is a great reminder on how masters swimming doesn’t always fit into your tri training plan.  Not that you can’t make it work, just something to think about.

#2) Turning an ironing board into a desk for a trainer.  Great little post from Frayed Laces with photos on how to still get non-training work done…while training on the trainer.

#3) A number of Garmin units/components got firmware updates.  Although no sport units in particular the previous week (see below for the past few days), the Garmin Communicator was updated.  Along with a slew of hiking units.  But, the real reason to note this post is that the blog includes tons of GPS related news each week from just about everywhere – including some stuff on both Chirp and Wahoo fitness (and often sport stuff too!).

#4) Lance Armstrong’s first triathlon?  Hmm…starting with a January tri…ehh?

#5) Garmin 310XT now has 3s and 30s rolling power.  Somehow this slipped by my radar the last few days until I caught this thread on Slowtwitch.  Sweet candy!  This to me resolves the last holdout of recommending the FR310XT for power-meter enabled cyclists as it makes pacing by a 310XT now a realistic item (without having to do auto-lap to get lap avg).  This is huge for folks looking to have one device across bike and run.  Now in version 3.00, update at that link.

Random Notes

I don’t have a ton in the random notes category for this week.  But…

As some of you saw via Twitter, I had a great discussion with the Garmin team this past week (at 2AM my time in Asia…), and you should see some posts from that trickle out over the next few days.  The primary point of the discussion was how the different units do calorie calculations, and how to get the most accurate results from your unit.  But we discussed probably 20 other topics from how much longer the FR305 will be on the market, to The Girl’s request for a pink Edge 500.  More on all those items later…

That’s it! Have a good remainder of your weekend!
